The Maine State Capitol in Augusta
Augusta

Augusta, a city of 19,000, is the capital of Maine. It is the third-smallest state capital by population and it was chosen as the state capital in 1827.

Maine State Capitol

The Maine State Capitol building is a must-see if you're in the area. Completed in 1832, it was modeled after the Massachusetts State House but has unique design features such as its building material: Maine granite. The dome of the Capitol is made of copper and atop the dome is the mythical figure Minerva, symbolizing wisdom. The height of the building is 185 feet. Be sure to check out the Hall of Flags, a public hall that displays flags used by Maine divisions of the armed services dating back to the Civil War.
