"Wee" Wonders

Saco

The more northerly of the sister cities, Saco is most easily accessed by exit 36 on I-95.

Saco Drive-In

The Saco Drive-In is an old-fashioned venue that plays a contemporary movie every night. It's also a lot cheaper than a regular theater if you have a few people with you (admission is per car). By tuning your radio, you're able to watch the movie on the big screen with a personalized volume setting. It's a nice way to spend a summer night.

Excalibur
Funtown Splashtown USA

If we aren't at one of Maine's amazing beaches on a hot summer day, our favorite place to be is definitely Funtown Splashtown USA. Funtown is an amusement park and Splashtown is a water park, and you can purchase admission to either Funtown or Splashtown individually, or both together. The complex located on Route 1 in Saco.

One of the highlights of Funtown is Excalibur, a wooden roller coaster. Its fast speeds and steep drops make for an exciting ride. Another highlight is Dragon's Descent, a tower ride with a 220-foot vertical drop. The drop is thrilling and you get great views of the surrounding area from the top.

In Splashtown, the Mammoth and Tornado are giant water slides that you ride down on multiple-person inner tubes. The lines for these slides can get long, but you can usually beat the crowds by riding them early in the day. There are also the 3 Mount Olympus water slides, one of which lets you and a friend race each other to the finish line. Splashtown is especially refreshing on a hot day.

"Wonder Gone By" -- Vacationland Bowling

We're sad to say that Vacationland Bowling closed in 2017 after 34 years. We'd spent many rainy days at this Saco bowling alley over the years. The style of bowling played here was New England's own "candlepin," where the bowling balls are small enough to be held in the palm of your hand and each player gets 3 throws per frame. Because fallen pins are not cleared between throws, a skilled player can use the "dead wood" to their advantage when faced with a split. While multiple perfect 300s have been recorded in standard bowling, the highest-ever score in candlepin is only 245.
