| Cape Elizabeth
This lovely coastal town of 9,000 residents is located just outside of Portland and is home to stunning ocean views.
Portland Head Light
Built in 1791, Portland Head Light is the oldest lighthouse in Maine. It is situated on a peninsula at the entrance to the main channel of Portland Harbor where it warns ships of the rocky coast. Its light can be seen from 24 miles away. The lighthouse is located in Fort Williams Park, a 90-acre coastal park that was the former home of the U.S. Army's Fort Williams (operational during both World Wars). There are several trails through the park, all of which offer amazing views of the rocky coast and crashing waves. The park is great for photo opportunities, with the lighthouse and ocean providing an excellent and unique backdrop. The "Beach to Beacon 10K" is a running race that begins at Crescent Beach State Park and ends at Portland Head Light. Run in early August, it attracts world-class runners and offers a great watching experience, especially if you can get a spot near the finish line (which is directly in front of the lighthouse).
