"Wee" Wonders

Portland

Maine's largest city has a population of around 66,000 and provides numerous entertainment options.

Portland Sea Dogs

As big baseball fans, we always enjoy going to a Sea Dogs game at Hadlock Field. The Sea Dogs are the minor league (class AA) affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. As such, Red Sox players returning from injuries often play a few games in Portland before returning to the big leagues. This always generates excitement and sometimes regional attention from New England sports reporters. The Maine Monster in left field is a replica of Fenway Park's Green Monster, and it adds a familiarity to the park for Red Sox fans visiting from out-of-state. A Sea Dogs game is relatively cheap to attend and is a great way to spend a summer night.

Maine Red Claws

Another sports option in Portland is the Maine Red Claws, an NBA G League team founded in 2009. The team is affiliated with the Boston Celtics and new Celtics draft picks usually end up on the G League roster. Often, good G League players end up in the NBA, so you might get to see the next big Celtics star in Portland (Avery Bradley, for example, is a Red Claws alumnus). The Red Claws play in the Portland Exposition Center (visible in the Sea Dogs photo above) and, like the Sea Dogs, are a low-cost alternative to the expensive pro sports teams in Boston.
